1) Why does the BioNet® utilize Two busses and not just One?

No Single bus technology can communicate to all of the device types contained in the BioNet Control System. Each bus is optimized (cost and speed) for communication to particular device types.

2) Is it common to utilize more than One bus in a control system?

Yes. Multiple busses (typically two and sometimes three) are used to incorporate as many smart devices as possible for the gathering of the rich information located in smart devices (multiple variables, diagnostics, asset information, etc.)

3) What busses are available with the BioNet Bioreactor Control System?

The BioNet is offered with Foundation fieldbus, and DeviceNet or Profibus DP.

4) How do you determine the appropriate busses for the BioNet Bioreactor Control System?

We use Foundation fieldbus for devices that have ?analog? values. For devices with ?discrete? values we utilize either DeviceNet or Profibus DP.

5) What is the origin of the busses offered for the BioNet Bioreactor Control System?

Foundation fieldbus originated in North America as the newest representative of bus technology offering a number of unprecedented features. DeviceNet has been widely used over the last decade with Allen-Bradley PLC’s in North America. Profibus DP has been used throughout Europe on the Siemens PLC’s.

6) What are the technical advantages of utilizing busses on the BioNet Bioreactor Control System?

The use of busses allows us to capture an unprecedented amount of measurement and control data. This data is communicated faster and more securely than previously possible. The result is improved measurement, resulting in improved control.

7) What are the cost advantages of the use of busses on the BioNet Bioreactor Control System?

The use of busses allows for significant cost reductions associated with wiring and labor (>50%) as well as commissioning savings (>80%).
